Which losses need a crew out tonight?

Every out-of-hours call to a restoration firm is the same question in different clothes: does this need a truck now, or does it hold until the morning?

Hold something that should have gone out and the loss grows while you sleep. The industry works to a 24 to 48 hour window before microbial growth starts on porous materials, and clean Category 1 water that sits long enough stops being Category 1.

That is a risk-based guideline rather than a hard rule in the IICRC S500 standard — temperature and substrate move it — but it is why a call at 2am is not the same call at 8am.

Category and class are a technician’s call on site, not a phone call at 2am. The agent asks the questions your team needs in order to prioritise — what the source is, how long it has been running, whether there is sewage, how much of the building is wet — and hands them over. It does not classify the loss and we don’t build it to.

It won’t make a judgement we haven’t agreed

If a caller describes something outside the scenarios we’ve mapped, it escalates rather than guessing. That means the occasional mobilisation you’d rather it had held until morning. In a trade where four hours changes what the job costs, that’s the correct failure direction.

It won’t handle a caller in real distress well

Someone standing in a flooded home at 3am, a family just let back in after a fire. It recognises these and hands over fast. It doesn’t try to reassure them and it doesn’t keep them talking.
